Story boarding

Today i took in my print outs, of each of my shots from my final storyboard.

I soon relised that i had far too many photos, so i had to cut out / scrap some of the shots, either because they were not needed or due to them being of low quality (where the printer did not print them correctly)

Shown below are some snapshots from todays lesson, just to give you an idea of what i done:

Planning for opening sequence *Sugar n Spice*

Shown below is my final story board, for the opening Sequence for *SugaR 'N' SpicE*

Because the size of the photos, and the amount that there is i was unable to upload the photos so instead, i have made a short (2min -aprox.-) animatic video of my storyboard, which is shown below.

3 mood board (video) photos

I took 3 photos from my mood board video, i then drew the parts from the photos that were most significant to my photo/storyboard.

Below are the drawn versions of the 3 photos:

Story/photoboarding *plan for opening sequence*

Here are some screen shots, to show how i made the photos i took look more like a story board...

Planning for opening sequence *Sugar n Spice*

I started making a shot by shot plan both in writting and in drawing.

I decided that when i got home i would instead of draw the shot by shot plan for my opening sequence, i would instead take some photos and then edit them into more of a drawn kind of look, to make it look more like a story board, this for me was easier than drawing it, but i do realise that i will have to draw my story board, but this *photo version* is just a template for me to follow when it comes to drawing my story board.

Here is the brief version of my photo story board. (Does not show my full opening sequence)

*Sugar 'n' Spice*

Final 25 word (Ish) for my film opening.

Five essential elements for a title sequence

For a successful opening sequence you will need these following things:

1) The name of the film near the beginning of the sequence
2) Good sound track that relates well to the movie
3) Institutional detail - Distributor / Production company
4) Don't let it drag out too long, but keep  good amount of footage
5) *Unique* Story line

Napoleon Dynamite (opening sequence)

Napoleon Dynamite

*Opening sequence*

Designed by Aaron Ruell and created by Jared Hess & co.

Production Companies
Access Films
Fox Searchlight Pictures (presents)
MTV Films (in association with)
Paramount Pictures (presents)

Napoleon Dynamite has a wonderful title sequence, bringing in the cast and crew’s names spelled out in condiments on plates of cafeteria food and objects relating to the movie itself.

The main creator of the opening titles for *napolian dynamite* was a man called Saul Bass (1920-1996). He was not only one of the great graphic designers of the mid-20th century but the undisputed master of film title design thanks to his collaborations with Alfred Hitchcock, Otto Preminger and Martin Scorsese.

I really like the opening sequence to N.D, as it is very diffrent to the standard titles that you see on many films these days, and that is what makes this opening sequence stand out.

The idea to actualy write the titles on objects is a very well htought out idea, but yet is so simple no one ever really made it happen, until N.D came around, and made it all happen, this title sequence open'd many directors, film makers, and many other peoples eyes, it just shows them what is possible when you put your mind to it, and its not always the high-tech graphics or special effects that wins over the audience, it can simply be a blob of ketchup on a plate that wins them over, and all in all it is the plain simplicity of this title sequence that i like and enjoy the most, and that is what i think makes it work as a title sequence, it is simple yet effective and most importantly of all, it makes the audience engage morewith what is happening, and also it relates to the movie very well indeed, just by simply using a few props from teh movie itself.

Shot number used in *memento* and the titles..

The titles in memento are structured in a very basic list manner. basically lists the roles in the movie and then the person that had that role afterwards, i noticed that the main production logo came first, as with many other films the production logos always come first, but i was quite surprised to see the director was named later on in the sequence and not sooner, as i would of thought the diretcor had a major role in the making of the movie so therefore had a higher place in the titles list.

There is mainly one shot used within this sequence, where the cmaera is lookin over / on to the photos that the man is processing. Its is the same in most of the opening sequence, but at 1.56 the camera moves to show the man placing a photo into his camera and into his side pocket, there are a varity of movements used in this 10 sec clip, but it is only one camera shot, with the action hapening on one angle. The camera then pans up, and follws the movement of the guy lifting up the camera, this is shortly followed by the guy taking a photo, this then is closely followed with his reaction to the photo, *reaction shot*.

at aprox *2.05* there is a very quick camera angle change which shows the guy putting his camera away again, this is showing that the guy is acting very quickly and in hast, adds more drama and makes the scene much more tense, which is good for an opening scenem becuase it makes the audience want to watch on.

Then it cuts back to his face again very quickly and then this is followed by (in the last 5-6 secs, by a cmaera shot of what i can only assume is the floor with blood on it, this again adds to the tense atmosphere within this short scene.

Overall this is a short, yet very effective title sequence, with only a few camera / angle changes at the end, builds up the tension very well and keeps the audience fixed on the action aswell as the titles, which is very important (always keep the audience in mind, never go above what is needed and keep it as simple as possible)

Film brief three

US-Film (Independant film)

Director of independant US films: Christopher Nolan

One of his films that he has made is memento. (I do realise that there is no young protagonist in this film, but it is us and is an independant film, so therefore does fit the brief in some aspects)

Plot:A man, suffering from short-term memory loss, uses notes and tattoos to hunt for the man he thinks killed his wife.

Below is the opening sequence to memento, i am going to analyse it and state what titles appear within the sequence.

This sequence is very simple, yet very effective. The main idea behind this sequence is a man (detective) of some sort, or thats what i can make out from this opening. All that is occouring is the man is shaking the single photos in order to process them (make the imeage appear) this type of action works very well with the way in which the titles appear, which is they fade in, alsmost intime with the appearing photos.

The titles have been placed on the screen so that they are very eailiy visable and easy to see, with the white back ground on the photos, and even when the pictures / photos appear the titles are still very easy to read, this is mainly due to both the background itself and the font / colour used on the titles.

The titles (in running order) that show within this opening sequence are:

*Newmarket

Movie Storm @ Coleridge

On the 21/01/09 we went to coleridge to experiment with the new movie storm software. We would of stayed at Long Road and worked on it form there but unfortunatly the software *movie storm* is far to advanced for our laptops, and even for the mac's at coleridge...

The first couple of hours of editing were going well, when people were making their sets, backgrounds and characters, but when it got to the audio for the videos, that was when many of us had trouble as when we eventualy got access to the mics, they did not work on every ones mac's only 3 or so people actualy managed to get the mics to work, in order to upload spoken dialog on their animations.

The other down side to the software etc, was when people came to the filming / final production
of their animations, as the mac's couldnt quite cope with the software and therefore started freezing, crashing and just in general were very slow, which was very annnoying especialy when we had just spent many hours working on the set, chracters and animation itself, all that time and then come to find the software just starts to lag and even close down!

Overall the trip was good, and i learnt a great deal about Movie Storm, but it definatly could of been better, especialy with the final production / saving to quicktime at the end as that was annoying, considering we had spent hours working on the animation, and then to find the software slows down and crashes on you, is very stressfull and annoying indeed, but all in all apart from the final stages of the production of our animations the trip went well.

I look forward to the next trip to coleridge and hopefully we will get a chance to explore the other equipment / software they have at coleridge, and not just Movie Storm, as i believe after a while it does get a bit tedious, you could easily compare it to playing around with sims! and that gets boring after a while just like movie storm does, a bit of variety in the work and such would be a good idea, but overall it is good software aslong as your not on it for too long!

Films that relate to brief three

The film Venus, written by Hanif Kureishi , and directed by Roger Michell

Plot: Life for a pair of veteran actors gets turned upside down after they meet a brash teenager.

This film relates with brief three in many ways.

In brief three it states:
"An independent movie featuring a young protagonist"

In the film, (Venus), there is a young character called jessie who is played by Jodie Whittaker. She plays the young protagonist within this film. This film is basically about how she cares for this elderly man and their friendship grows and grows, but overall she is the main character, "venus".

Below are three videos, one video being the trailer for the film itself, another one being a behind the scenes sort of video / interview with the actress that plays jessie / venus, and the last video is a behind the scenes / interview with the other main charater who plays "maurice" and that actor is Peter o'toole.

My production logo (KK-Productions)

My first idea, for my production logo, for the planets and such, well i had to change that idea as it was far to complex, and i could not make/produce it within the short time we had, which was aprox 2 days, worth of working on the actual logo.

But overall i am pleased with my final logo considering that it is no where near to what i first wanted, apart from the kk-productions title of course! But as i said overall i am very pleased with the results, considering that i completed that logo within abour 40minutes or so, the only downfall with it is the sound track over the top, that was more of a last minute thing, and i had to use garage band to find a suitable or close to suitable sound effect for my animation/logo.

Below are the variations of my logo, from stills shots, animated without sound and my logo with sound.

This is my final production logo.

This is my first production logo for *KK-Productions*. I designed this about a year ago now, it took me aprox. 3 hours in total to design and make. I used many programes, ranging from the simple programe which is paint, up to the quite advanced programe which is serif movie plus 4 / 5. I got the original preset animation (the dragon) from a dvd/disk i got from america via ebay, i then animated it with a moving foggy background, and then i animated the moving titles over the top, finally i found a sound track, which was suitable for the logo / titles. which i gained from my college / that i was attending at the time.

Overall this logo is very good, as it shows my creative side, and gives the audience and insight into what i do within my productions.

(This was also another part of inspiration that helped me to make my 2nd production logo for my diploma work.)

Here is my orginal logo for *KK-Productions*

Where next?? *film opening*

Where next, what idea to go with?

Relating back to my feedback, from mike and dave, i have decided to stick with brief three, mainly because it will be easy to film, and i have discovered that people like the idea of this movie better than the other three mainly because my other ones would be too hard to film in college, whereas due to the college / school setting the opening for brief three would be easy to film / produce.

What needs to be done?

In order to make the film opening possible i first of all need to pick out the key facts / ideas from my brief, in order to show the audience the general idea of the film, but i need to keep in mind that i need to get the balance between showing too much and not enough, to ensue that the audience want to watch on, to find out what happens within the full movie.

Feed back on my 4 briefs

Dave and Mike listened to my four briefs, and wrote a few comments back about all four of them, heres what they wrote:

Mike

Brief one:
Good plan, but impossible to film but could be made into a spoof.

Brief two:
Really good pitch / story line - could be great to watch!

Brief three:
Great pitch - would be great to watch, quite comical.

Brief four:
Interesting, suitable target audience.

Dave:

Brief one:
Good idea, but hard with resources available, "spoof version" perhaps?

Brief two:
Good idea, easy to film, and could turn out well!

Brief three:
No potential problems

Brief four:
Interesting idea, could turn out well!

Overall i believe my feedback from mike and dave, was reasonable and very positive overall.
I am pleased with the comments given especially  brief three, because this was the brief that i was going to go ahead with and produce an opening for.

Thriller video

This video, is very simple yet looks profesional due to the effects used, this is the main reason why i like this video, because its simple yet looks more porfesional than the other thriller videos i have looked at, simply due to the effects used.

The story is simple and follows the genre of thriller / horror very well, it may be simple but they have built it up very well to make it seem more dramatic than it actualy is.

Overall i like this video mainly due to the profesional look of it, it just shows you that with a bit of editing you can make a amature looking set of footage look much more profesional just with a few edits here and there.

Feedback / review on students thriller blog & video

I belive they could very well have researched more into the thriller genre. All thye have on their blod is one video, showing an opening from the movie "seven". There are many other thriller opening scenes / movies out therem so they could of easily spoken and researched many, many more, in order to make their planning easyer.

Talking of planning, i believe the deatils for the props and so on were good and in an easy to read list, but they were beery slim on details, for example the scene settings / locastions they are one of the most important aspects of a film, and to have as little information . details on the locations, such as on this blog, then they will in turn find it very hard to find locations when it comes to the filming.

As for the video it's self i believe it is very much like the seven video, maybe a bit too much and t does definatly appear as if they have copyied it, which will of course lower their mark a fair bit. The video related very well with their story board, or though the story board was very amature and posibly not quite as good quality as you would expect of an a level media student, but overal i belive they did stick with their story board and plans.

Overall for the blog and the video its self i would mark them with a high C maybe a B.

Production logo ideas (KK - Productions)

logo ideas (KK - Productions)
Inspiration:
My main idea is to have, a moving animation, mainly planets. As i believe this will make my production logo look more interesting and modern. Also the titles will move aswel, as seen in the 2nd video.
One of my ideas was to have 2 plantets crashing into each other. (one with the letters kk on it) and one with (productions on it). These words / letters will hopefully be made to look as if they are engraved into in planets themselfs. When the planets do colide they will create an explosion (particle cloud is formed) and from the dust / debris particles the full production title (kk-productions) is created. That is when the titles will be animated to shudder and shake to show they have just been blown up, then for a final time they will blow up again, and shatter to revel a black screen, i decided a black screen at the end would be usefull because you can easily write *presents* after the production title or even just go straight into the movie / video itself.
So far i have one sound track that i downloaded from, soundsnap.com. I will at a later date download more sound effects, such as an explosion, and posibly some more music.
If i struggle to mkae this animation, then i can always simplify it and cut out the planets and just have the exploding titles on there own, but before i consider that i will aim to complete or at least attempt the planet idea, but as i said if that fails then i can easily simplify it.
Here are a few ideas of how i could simplify the animation / production logo, mianly by using "motion graphics" basicaly moving titles.

Continuity task

For this task, we had to practice camera work in order to show continuity within the video. (so the shots flow together in order to show a smooth action sequence)

film opening

For this task we had to create a short film opening sequence with some stock footage and music.

Columbia's logo, a lady carrying a torch and draped in the american flag. This logo is a complex animated logo, with many diffrent colours and camera movements.

The logo has been changed from 1936. In 1936 the Columbia "Torch Lady" appeared with shimmering light projecting from her touch but that was far to bright, and the camera zoomed all the way into the torch to revel a seperate screen. But now the brighter light beem and radical zoom has been replaced by the rays of light projecting from the torch that she has in her hand.

This animation of the light beeming out really draws the audience in and allows them to focus more on the title above / behind the light. which is *Columbia*.

As for the lady herself, she is static and does not move, most of the movement is in the camera panning / zooming out from torch itself, to revel the full logo.

These video's are showing the Columbia Pictures
Home Entertainment logo from (1978 -1st video- and 2007 -2nd video- )

Here are some other versions of the production logo i have found

Layer cake opening scene

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=QHKI8zMHCjE

I have chosen this opening scene. It is from the 2004 movie "layer cake".

I personaly like this opening scene, due to the camera work/effects/editing, also the audio dialog over top of the footage works well.

First of all the camera work, quick, snappy shots at the start work wel with the action that is going on. Also the panning shots to revel a diffrent scene works very well aswell. To show the olden times in comparison to how times are now etc.

The editing makes the atmosphere / feel for the scene seem more real. The urban feel, which i personaly like in mainy movies, but i feel that this opening scene espeicaly reenforces the urban feel, simply due to the editing / camera work, which is sharp / snappy and action packed. which makes the viewing audience want to watch on.

The drug scene in the pharmacy, is the best part of the opening sequence. The editing especialy is very good, the transition between the drugs and what the actual products are, works very well, and is a complex effect that works very welll, and that kind of effect you dont seem to see much in other films. were as with this, the opening sequence alone, you see many actions / effects, which really draws the audience in.

Overall this is a very good, effective opening sequence .
